DORIA: SMART ACT IS THE BEST AVENUE TO USE FOR PROPERTY TAX REFORM
BAYONNE - TypingStartsHereSenator Joseph V. Doria, D- Hudson,
today released the following statement regarding a news conference held this
yesterday by Assemblymen Louis M .Manzo and Gordon M. Johnson stressing the
need for the enactment of the New Jersey Save Money and Reform Taxes (SMART)
Act to help lower property taxes:
"As the Senate sponsor of the SMART Act, I see it as the only
feasible way to reform the State's unnecessary dependence on property taxes
to help fund public education. As an educator, believe me when I say that
we in New Jersey are committed to providing an exceptional education to all
students. We have to ease the burdens of those who can least afford to pay
high property taxes.
"The SMART Act would reform the current system by allowing all
residents to pay the same percentage of their salary toward property taxes.
We in the Legislature owe it to the New Jerseyans who elected us to voice
their needs here in Trenton. We owe it to every household that struggles to
withstand the burden of our property tax system to provide them with
meaningful, lasting relief."
