ADVISORY ADVISORY ADVISORY
COOLING STATIONS STILL OPEN IN JERSEY CITY
Mayor Healy & OEM Remind Residents to Stay Safe & Cool

JERSEY CITY, NJ – Mayor Jerramiah T. Healy, the Municipal Council and the Jersey City Office of Emergency Management (OEM) will continue to expand the hours of operation at various cooling centers, swimming facilities and parks with water sprinklers throughout the City as temperatures remain around the one hundred degree mark, with a heat index at 116 degrees. All residents, especially the elderly, disabled people, pregnant women and children under the age of two are encouraged to stay indoors or take advantage of these facilities if necessary.

The Jersey City Office of Emergency Management (OEM) has issued the following tips for staying cool during this heat wave.
• Remain indoors (preferably in air conditioned space) as much as possible
• Wear lightweight, light colored and loose fitting clothing
• Keep hydrated by consuming plenty of water and natural juices and avoid beverages with alcohol and caffeine which increase dehydration
• Eat light meals
• Refrain from strenuous activities
• Recognize the symptoms of heat disorders

To protect others from heat exhaustion, residents are urged to check on elderly neighbors and those with disabilities. Apply a sunscreen with a high SPF content to small children to avoid overexposure to the sun. Never leave children or pets in closed vehicles where temperatures could exceed 190 degrees in less than ten minutes, and provide shade and cool water to pets.

Residents are also urged to conserve energy wherever possible, especially between 3 p.m. and
7 p.m. when demand for electricity typically peaks.
• Turn off lights, computers, and TVs when they are not in use and utilize dimmers, timers, and motion detectors on indoor and outdoor lighting.
• Close blinds, shades, and draperies facing the sun to keep the heat out.
• Keep doors leading to uncooled parts of your home closed.
• Delay heat-producing tasks like washing and drying laundry or dishes until later in the day and wait until the load is full.
• Refrain from using non-essential appliances.
