It's Kean's turn to charge ethical lapses Sunday, June 18, 2006 BY DEBORAH HOWLETT Billy Musto died in February, but the specter of the notorious Hudson County political boss now haunts the campaign for U.S. Senate. Musto served 35 years in the Legislature and as mayor of Union City, until he was convicted in 1982 on federal corruption charges. Democratic Sen. Robert Menendez, a 28-year-old former aide to the mayor at the time, was a witness for the prosecution, testifying against the man he has described as a mentor and father figure. . . . Kean criticized Menendez for pushing Congress to exempt gum arabic from a ban on imports from Sudan as leverage to stop genocide in Darfur. A substance derived from acacia trees in the Sudan, gum arabic is widely used in making candy and pharmaceuticals, A Jersey City firm, whose executives have contributed to Menendez's campaigns, is the nation's largest importer of gum arabic. Aides to Menendez said without the exemption, Importer Services Corp. would have gone out of business. Kean also charged a Hudson County contractor, Hindsight Inc., donated $4,000 to Menendez five days after Menendez wrote a letter of recommendation on Congressional stationery. Hindsight, a data management firm, later won a $4 million contract with the county, even though its bid for the work was not the lowest submitted. Menendez has said he had nothing to do with awarding the contract and Hindsight executives have been longtime supporters. . . . For the complete article, see the Link.
