Hello,
We waged a long battle to reopen the Reservoir, and last week we had an
important victory that gets the public back in. ( see
http://jcreservoir.org/ )
We're elated to be able to offer this quick press release on a clean-up
event we are running this Saturday, the first event this year.
Thanks!

Little more than a week after holding a rally with hundreds of
supporters at Jersey City's City Hall and convincing the City Council to
restore public access to Reservoir No. 3, the Jersey City Reservoir
Preservation Alliance is moving swiftly to reopen the historic
Reservoir-turned nature preserve to the people.

Beginning in 2001, with the approval of then-Mayor Glen D. Cunningham,
the Reservoir Alliance had been keeping the Reservoir grounds clean of
trash and clear of excessive underbrush and weeds. Last summer, the
Reservoir Alliance opened the Reservoir to the public for the first
time, holding tours and nature walks and allowing city dwellers to enjoy
such un-city pleasures as fishing and even kayaking.

But in November 2005, the City government locked the Reservoir Alliance
- and the public - out of the Reservoir. That decision was repealed
after the Reservoir Alliance's rally last week - although some in Jersey
City government continue to voice skepticism about the long-term
preservation of the Reservoir as passive parkland. The Reservoir
Alliance has re-affirmed its dedication to that goal.

This Saturday, July 8, from 8 am to 7 pm, the Reservoir Alliance will
host a volunteer clean up day at the Reservoir. "Because the Alliance
was locked out for so long, some trash and a lot of overgrowth need to
be cleaned up before we allow people to come back to enjoy the
Reservoir," explained Cynthia Hadjiyannis, of the Reservoir Alliance.

"We're asking supporters of the Reservoir to come out this Saturday,
wearing work clothes and bringing gloves, rakes, shovels and pruning
sheers, if they have them."

"This is a crucial first step in reopening the Reservoir this summer,"
Ms. Hadjiyannis continued.

The Reservoir Alliance will follow up with details of its Saturday, July
15 public celebration at the Reservoir, and its "*Discover the
Reservoir"* events for the summer.

For more information about volunteering, the public can call (201)

at (201) 656-5235 or (201) 705-9219 (cel), or Cynthia Hadjiyannis at
