Information on Taxes and Board of Education - Councilman Fulop

Here is a quick update on two issues, which are time sensitive, and may pertain to you regarding education and taxes.

Board of Education candidate's forum for upcoming election:

Jersey City Families for Better Schools (JCFBS) will hold a Board of Education candidate forum moderated by the Jersey Journal. This event will be held Thursday April 3, 2008 at 7 p.m. at Public School #4 (107 Bright Street). School control will return to Jersey City for the first time since 1989, making this an important election in shaping our cities direction and the education system.

Tax Appeals:

The deadline for filing tax appeals for those interested is April 1st. Any property owner feeling aggrieved with the assessments can file an assessment appeal before the Hudson County Board of Taxation located at 567 Pavonia Avenue, Jersey City, NJ 07306.

The appeal must be filed by April 1, 2008. Taxpayers can go directly to the Board or get the forms from city hall and take it to the Pavonia address. The form contains instructions such as:

a) $5.00 filing fee payable to the Board on assessments less than $150,000 b) Taxes must be paid by the time of filing c) Representation by an attorney is required if the owner is a corporation d) Owner must present comparable sales

Best regards

Steven Fulop
