prieto STATEMENT ON CASTRO RESIGNATION
(SECAUCUS) - Assemblyman Vincent Prieto made the following statement in
response to today's resignation of Fidel Castro as Cuba's president.
Born in Cuba's Las Villas province, the Secaucus-based state legislator
moved to the United States with his family in 1971, when he was 10 years
"Today marks only the end of Fidel's rule, not necessarily the end of
the Castro regime.
"The replacement of Fidel Castro by his brother Raul will be a change in
name only and that too, only in the first name.
For real change that would benefit the people of Cuba, we need to see a
forward movement towards democracy. Anything short of holding free and
fair elections in Cuba is a farce.
"The nearly one and a quarter million Cuban-Americans would be heartened
to see democratic forces begin to take over in their country of
